ABSTRACT

This article is concerned with a study of pronunciation, made by students of Endlish Literature Departement, faculty of Cultural Sciences, University of Sumatera Utara. In this article I will analyze about pronunciation between native and non-native, the participants of this study is me alone. I use my own voice to compare with the native voice that I took from english google translete, The purpose of this lesson is to find out the difference in sound in more detail through the data that I got from the praat application. The equality of the pronunciations of the participant was described in graphs and the result were shown percentage as given in table.

A.introduction

Praat is a unique application for recording or developing recorded sounds and then analyzing them in depth. Spectral format, pitch, intensity, and analysis are the four basic tests you can perform.Praat is a desktop program dedicated to those studying linguistics. In particular, it is an audiopackage that is capable to analyzeCreated by Paul Boersma and David Weenink of the Institute of Phonetics Sciences of the University of Amsterdam, Praat allows you to make high-quality pictures for your publications. For other speech evaluation suites.

Linguistics is the scientific study of language. Linguists apply the scientific method to conduct formal studies of speech sounds and gestures, grammatical structures. Linguistics is the study of language, how it is put together and how it functions. Various building blocks of different types and sizes are combined to make up a language. Sounds are brought together and sometimes when this happens, they change their form and do interesting things. Words are arranged in a certain order, and sometimes the beginnings and endings of the words are changed to adjust the meaning. Then the meaning itself can be affected by the arrangement of words and by the knowledge of the speaker about what the hearer will understand.

B.result and discussion

The result in this study is presented in tables, in the table below we can see the difference between native and non-native, the differences include frequency, quantity, and intensity. The result of prat analysis is :

SPEAKER

Frequency (Pitch)

Quantity (duration)

Intensity (spectrum)

C. Conclusion

The conclusion shows from data analysis shows that there are differences in Pitch, Duration, and Intensity between Native Speaker and Non-native Speaker in speaking Englishand as we have seen through the data in the table, non-natives speak longer than natives, this may happen because I as a non-native are not used to or rarely pronouncing English, different from natives who are used to it because it is their daily language.

here we also know that software such as praat is very helpful in this analysis process, but of course it's not easy to use this software the first time. and that's why students in the departement of enlish should learn this application, so that they don't have difficulties, and help the learning process in the field of linguistics
